When you go away for the weekend, what more could you ask for?
For us, it was the second year running that we headed to Hornchurch in Essex and took part in London's only 24 hour trail run at the Spitfire Scramble.
Last year saw temperatures hit 33C and we never thought that we'd experiment that again - it turned out to be mild 25C instead!
We were lucky to take part in another 24 hour race last month at Hope 24 down in Devon and you get such a great experience at these mini running festivals that we'd recommend it to anyone that's thinking of putting one in their running diary.
From arriving on Friday afternoon and setting up both our tent to sleep in, and our stand to retail for the weekend, it was 48 hours of soaking up the atmosphere and mingling with like minded people.
There were 6 of us in the team this year, two of which were pregnant, so they were on strict orders to take it nice and easy on their laps!
The course was a lovely 5.5 mile loop through picturesque fields with views over London and through Hornchurch Country Park which felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. With runners of all abilities taking part, it was a really relaxed feel to the occasion and that's one of the great things about the event.
Here's Team runr's Laura, with her take on the event and how she finds taking part after getting back in to running since having Max 5 months ago:
From midday Saturday, to midday Sunday, our team of 6 took it in turns to complete the loop and we racked up an impressive 19 laps. The distance we covered didn't matter as this was another event to rock up at and just have fun for the weekend.
With solo runners running for 24 hours (crazy, crazy people!) to teams of 8 just taking their time walking around the course, it was a fun, friendly experience that we're keen to experience again in the future. Big congratulations to Havering AC who won the team event and wracked up an impressive 38 laps in the 24 hours and to Mylene Elliot (15 laps) and Gary Timmins (21 laps) who won the solo events!
We want to say a big thank you to Danny and his team for letting us come along again.
The 2020 event is already open for entry and you can't go wrong with adding this to your diary for next year! Enter here - www.spitfirescramble.co.uk
Happy running.
