Running was often seen by many as a solitary sport - just you, your shoes, and the route ahead.
But in recent times, something has shifted. And HOW it has shifted!
Across towns and cities, there’s been a surge in the number of running clubs that have formed that are bringing people together to run as one.
From Solo Miles to Shared Strides
Over the last few years, more of us have decided to lace up our trainers and take those first tentative runs, whether it's for fitness, wellbeing, or simply to get outside. What started as a personal pursuit quickly grew into something bigger: the realisation that running is even more rewarding when it's shared with like minded people.
No longer the preserve of elite athletes or long-distance purists, today’s running groups are open to everyone — whether you’re tackling your first 5k or training for your tenth marathon.
Community First, Pace Second
One of the most powerful aspects of modern running clubs is the inclusivity. Groups now celebrate every runner, regardless of age, pace, experience or ability. The focus is on encouragement, connection, and enjoying the run, not on competition.
Many clubs split into pace groups so that no one is left behind, while others adopt “run and chat” sessions designed to make running more about community than clock-watching. This sense of togetherness is what keeps people coming back week after week.
Running Late
Located here in Southsea, where Runr sits, is Portsmouth's largest run group - Running Late.
Founded by Alice and Molly back in 2023, they are a great example of individuals who wanted to embrace running and use it as a way to bring people together.
What started as a small gathering of runners on a Monday evening, has now grown into an awesome community of runners from across the city.
As well as joining them on a run from a personal view when we can, we had the fortune of taking Runr along for a pop up event recently and we were blown away by the turn out!
Over 200 runners came along for a perfect evening which consisted of 30 minutes of running, split across 9 different pace groups, which ensured that all abilities were catered for.
The result was a festival feel where runners got to run, talk and be part of an awesome experience. The best thing was that this happens EVERY Monday!
Why Running Together Works
Running with others offers benefits that go far beyond fitness:
Motivation: It’s easier to head out for a run when you know friends are waiting.
Belonging: Clubs create a sense of identity and pride, connecting people who might otherwise never meet.
Accountability: A weekly group run helps turn running into a habit.
Mental Wellbeing: Sharing the highs and lows of running with others can ease stress and boost mood.
A Movement That’s Here to Stay
From city-wide initiatives like parkrun to local community groups, the growth of running clubs shows no signs of slowing. They’re not just about fitness — they’re about creating supportive spaces where people of all abilities can move together.
Whether you run for health, headspace, or the sheer joy of moving, there’s a group out there ready to welcome you. Because when we run together, we discover that the finish line isn’t the only thing that matters — it’s the journey, and the people we share it with.
